David Weber's space warfare books, especially those known as the "Honor Harrington" series after their main character, are long, involved, well-written and page-turners. The first book is On Basilisk Station. Get started on one of these just before bedtime, but make sure it's a Friday or Saturday night. You'll be awake a while longer than you anticipated.
David has a number of other good books, including some co-written with other authors such as Steve White and John Ringo. The Starfire series is an extremely well-written, thoughtful and disturbing story of xenophobia, space warfare, politics and fanaticism. The first book is Insurrection.
Miles isn't a mutant; he just looks that way. Born to aristocratic Vor parents, he was exposed to a genetic toxin while still unborn. The series jumps back and forth through Miles' life and adventures.
Whether he is a mild-mannered child, a cripple in the military academy, a lieutenant in the space navy (with an alter-ego as an admiral running the Dendarii Free Mercenaries), or an Imperial Auditor, he's quite a character. The first book -- well, which is the first book? -- ok, start with , which is a combination of "The Warrior's Apprentice," "The Mountains fo Mourning," and "The Vor Game." Coldfire? You won't find that word even mentioned for a couple books, if I recall correctly. The first book in the series is called Black Sun Rising. It's a rough world where your dreams become real.
"Monsters from the Id" it's not. Here the fae respond to the conscious and unconscious thoughts and beliefs and concerns of humans and local species alike. Worried that your gun might misfire? It will, because you worried about it. Mechanical goods are a thing of the past. The starship was one of the first things lost... Find out more about her series at:
Earth has been discovered by aliens, and the fact is top secret. You see, the aliens are friendly, but they're not staying around. They are fleeing from the Posleen. The Posleen resemble a crosses between centaurs and lizards, and view anything that moves as food. Unfortunately, they're intelligent, too. The first book in the Posleen series is A Hymn Before Battle.
A small Pennsylvania mountain town is moved, never mind how, from the year 2000 to the Germany of 1632. Now, the challenge is to survive. The series makes you realize just how much we count on the availability of food, fuels, medicines and other manufactured goods that would no longer be available. Start with 1632
