David Weber's space warfare books, especially those known as the "Honor Harrington" series after their main character, are long, involved, well-written and page-turners. The first book is On Basilisk Station. Get started on one of these just before bedtime, but make sure it's a Friday or Saturday night. You'll be awake a while longer than you anticipated.
David has a number of other good books, including some co-written with other authors such as Steve White and John Ringo. The Starfire series is an extremely well-written, thoughtful and disturbing story of xenophobia, space warfare, politics and fanaticism. The first book is Insurrection.
Miles isn't a mutant; he just looks that way. Born to aristocratic Vor parents, he was exposed to a genetic toxin while still unborn. The series jumps back and forth through Miles' life and adventures.
Whether he is a mild-mannered child, a cripple in the military academy, a lieutenant in the space navy (with an alter-ego as an admiral running the Dendarii Free Mercenaries), or an Imperial Auditor, he's quite a character. Coldfire? You won't find that word even mentioned for a couple books, if I recall correctly. The first book in the series is called Black Sun Rising. It's a rough world where your dreams become real.
